"The Man Trap"

Captain's Log: Supplemental. 2035 hrs.

Wow.

That's all I can say.

The Trektastic Voyage got off to a beautiful start with "The Man Trap," the first episode of Trek aired, though not the first filmed.

It's the story of the Enterprise crew's struggle against a shape-changing creature that lives on salt, which it especially enjoys taking from human beings, thus killing them.

Of course, it assumed the form of Dr. McCoy's first true love, and chaos ensued from there. The Enterprise travels to planet M-113 to provide a regular medical check-up for the scientists living on the planet. The wife of Professor Crater, the archaeologist on the planet, is Nancy Crater, the first love of Dr. McCoy. A crewman dies, and soon, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy realize something's amiss. A shape-shifting creature, the last of its kind, is assuming the form of Enterprise crewmembers and draining others of their salt, killing them in the process. Nancy Crater was the first victim years ago, and "Nancy" almost kills McCoy before Kirk and Spock show him the truth. McCoy kills the salt vampire, and the episode closes with McCoy considering the tragic nature of the creature's efforts to survive and the loss of his first love.

A solid story with great characterization, performances, and a creature that must have given 1966 audiences nightmares, especially the kiddies.

I'm off to watch the next episode in tonight's 40th anniversary marathon, "The Corbomite Maneuver," another classic.

But then again, they're all classics.
